“When creating a lighting design I like to focus on layering different fixtures to create texture, this means that the fixtures I choose and how I position them is crucial,” explains Fowler. “For this design I knew that the extra ‘punch’ of the Clay Paky would make a real difference. However it was not until the actual show that the lights’ performance drove home just how bright they are!”

The tour’s original lighting designers Baz Halpin and Chris Nyfield of Silent House Productions had asked Fowler to create a scaled down set for the tour’s Australasian, North American, Asian and UAE leg. For the Dubai show she specified Clay Paky Alpha Spot HPE 1500; Clay Paky Alpha Profile 1500; Clay Paky Sharpy and Clay Paky Sharpy Wash 330.

“To say that I was pleased with the performance of these Clay Paky fixtures would be an understatement,” enthuses Fowler. “The speed, mechanical dimming and beam shaping of the Sharpy Wash 330 is fantastic. Its bright, vivid colours alongside its fast and extensive pan and tilt movements work wonderfully combined with its perfect beam definition capabilities. The Sharpy Beam has a great gobo selection, including prisms and frost, which made the Sharpy a wonderful fixture to work with – and did I mention its extreme output?”

In addition to the Sharpy Wash 330 and Sharpy Beam, Fowler was impressed by Clay Paky’s Alpha range. “The Alpha Spot HPE 1500 are extremely bright (thanks to the 1500W lamp) and the colors are also remarkably vivid,” continues Fowler. “I really liked the gobo selection, as well as the zoom and speed of the fixture. In addition the Alpha Profiles’ Stay-Sharp-Zoom and Iris functions meant that I was able to program rapidly. Not only do the Clay Paky fixtures boast impressive feature sets, all three models clone really nicely, which made my job of adjusting and updating the programming quick and easy.”

As with many large shows the stage backdrop was a large 12.6m x 6.6m wide LED screen: “As every lighting designer knows, a bright LED screen can certainly present its challenges,” continues Fowler. “The brightness of the Clay Paky fixtures was a welcome tool in achieving a good balance with the video wall. These fixtures gave me the feeling that I was working with the LED screen instead of trying to overcome its brightness.”

Eclipse’s Project manager, Tom Ralston concurs: “The Lionel Richie show was a wonderful vehicle to show off Eclipse’s extensive stock of Clay Paky fixtures. I suggested the Sharpy Washes were used as an alternative to an LED moving head wash as I am such a fan of the fixture. Plus the sheer output of the Alpha 1500 range, coupled with the deep saturated colors and the extremely sharp focus on the gobo wheel, put them ahead of any alternative available in the region. It’s always great to use the Alpha 1500s on a large concert, they really do have the ability to cut right through the powerful LED screens.”

In addition to the B-EYE, Lundin specified 18 x Alpha 1500 Profiles and 24 x Sharpys to ensure lighting worked in balance with the stage design’s large LED screen. “The LED-wall is a major feature of the stage set. I needed super powerful fixtures to avoid interfering with the screen’s output when running detailed content,” continues Lundin. “Moving in to the larger venues while still trying to keep Veronica intimate with the audience was also a very important aspect of the design brief to take into account.”

Lighting designer Henrik Lundin is using a number of the triple-award winning Clay Paky B-EYE K20s to light Ethereal Swedish songstress Veronica Maggio’s first-ever Scandinavian arena tour.
Lundin, of Swedish production company YKNOT, says he was delighted to be able to apply the unique features of the new B-EYE K20 in combination with a strategically designed ‘mirror-prop’ package. “Using the B-EYE to cover the stage, both as front lights and for exposing the mirror props worked brilliantly,” says Lundin. “The B-EYE’s incredibly wide zoom, fast response time plus the immense power of the LEDs meant that the design process went very smoothly and we were all delighted with the result.”
The B-EYE K20’s, supplied to the tour by Swedish rental operation Lagom & Gott Ljud AB, have an output that is over 20% brighter than any equivalent LED wash light currently on the market. This meant that Lundin was not required to use 100% of the B-EYE’s output, even in arena venues. “Placing the B-EYEs on the front truss gave me the option to turn them 180 degrees to make them face the audience. This, in combination with the stunning break-up effect, meant that the audience really felt part of the show,” adds Lundin

In addition to using the B-EYE’s impressive maximum zoom range of 60º, Lundin also took advantage of the B-EYE’s individual cell control as he explains: “The ability to use the fixture’s full pixels without using any full-channel bitmapping is great. I think Clay Paky has hit a winning note with the dynamic shape engine. It enables the lighting designer to create individual looks without breaking a sweat! You can divide, shape and sculpt the light source on the fly, which offers the ultimate in creative control. This combined with the sure knowledge that the Clay Paky mechanics are reliable and the lenses top quality, make this fixture one of my absolute favourites!”

A keen Clay Paky user, Lundin is delighted with the effects that the B-EYE K20 offers, which includes three main modes: – wash light, beam fixture and graphics light. He says that for lighting designers it has opened up new channels in creativity. “I have been using Clay Paky for many years now so I’m always overjoyed when I hear that there is a new product coming out,” says Lundin. “I first saw the B-EYE in Stockholm and as soon as I got my hands on it I fell in love! I remember thinking it was a truly revolutionary fixture.”

COPENHAGEN, Denmark — Clay Paky reports that TV lighting designer Kasper Lange was impressed by the power of the company’s fixtures, which were included within the big rig lighting the 2014 semi-finals and finals, staged at B&W Halls here May 6, 8 and 10.

Denmark based Lange worked with Eurovision’s creative director Per Zachariassen to create a huge, structural lighting design that complemented the show’s titanic ‘diamond’ stage. Lange crafted a clean, architectural lighting look that allowed the angular stage to ‘open and close’ creating a dynamic mix of open and intimate lighting looks.
“The brief for the show can be summed up in two words – big and simple,” explains Lange. “The contest was open to almost 40 different nations and each nation’s set needed a different lighting look. The challenge for us was to make each song look unique but also to introduce an organic flow throughout the show and not create a ‘mash’ of 37 songs.”
A crucial part of a much larger lighting rig, Lange specified 178 x Clay Paky Sharpy Wash 330 fixtures to frame the set’s giant 110 x 30 metre LED back wall. The powerful punch of the Sharpy Wash added further definition to the wall whilst reflecting the sharp lines of light that ran throughout the Eurovision set.
“For this element of the design I wanted a small but very powerful wash fixture to sharply frame the large back wall LED screen,” continues Lange. “The Sharpy Wash 330 was the natural choice and in fact it turned out to be the biggest work horse of the show. The fixtures are just incredibly reliable, – throughout the entire two month production period for Eurovision we didn’t have a problem with a single one, needless to say I was totally blown away.”
In addition to the Sharpy Wash 330 Lange specified 32 x Clay Paky Alpha Beam 1500s as part of the huge lighting package supplied by a collaboration of Danish hire outfit LiteCom and global production house PRG.
The Alpha Beam 1500 belongs to the special category of fully automated ACL fixtures, in addition to its high luminous efficiency (185,000 lux at 10m) the fixture also holds a powerful effects engine for shaping and animating the beam for intense long distance and mid-air effects such as those seen in Lange’s Eurovision design.
“Because we had a spider cam filming the stage from above we couldn’t rig any trusses below 30 metres,” explains Lange. “This meant we needed a fixture with a throw powerful enough to cover the whole 30 metres. PRG introduced Clay Paky’s Alpha Beam 1500s to me because of their solid, super concentrated long throw beam. I was very impressed by the fixtures, they were the perfect tool for the job.”
Austria won the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest thanks to Conchita Wurst with the song “Rise Like a Phoenix”, and now will organize the next edition of this great musical event.

KRAKOW, Poland – LD Sebastian Pachciarek used a variety of Clay Paky fixtures in his lighting design for the celebration concert of the late pope John Paul II at the Divine Mercy Sanctuary in Krakow, Poland. The Polish celebration coincided with the celebration of a mass in Italy by Pope Francis marking the canonization of late Popes John Paul II and John XXIII as Saints.

Pachciarek put together an elegant lighting design for the large outdoor stage that was careful to complement the show’s large LED video element. Inspired by the colours and architecture of the church, the classic design captured the attention of hundreds of local and international pilgrims that had come to Krakow to celebrate the sainthood of the late pope.
“It was important to remember that this was no ordinary show,” explains Pachciarek. “This was not a jazz or pop concert but a celebration of huge importance to those present, so the lighting had to be exactly right. In addition it was being filmed for broadcast, so in addition to it being traditional enough so as not to offend there had to be interesting effects for the live filming element.”
In order to create his balanced design Pachciarek used a mixed lighting package, supplied by Polish production house TSE Grupa. Pachciarek specified a mix of Clay Paky fixtures including: Alpha Profile 1500s and Alpha Profile 1200s to light the large onstage orchestra and choir. For the show’s ‘effects’ segments Pachciarek used Alpha Spot QWO 800s and Sharpys to cut through the considerable light levels emitted from the onstage LED elements and general wash.
“The stage had a large LED screen at the back as well as numerous LED screen ‘bands’ that wrapped around the stage,” explains Pachciarek. “I needed a fixture that could cut through and for this I looked to the Sharpy, one of my favourite fixtures. I first used them a few years ago for my lighting design on Million Dollar Drop and I continue to use them now.”
The Sharpy is still a popular choice of fixture for lighting designers working with large video elements. The 189W razor sharp beam easily cuts through the light haze omitted from LED and video projected elements without issue to create textured layered lighting effects that add to any design.
“For the Celebration of Saint John Paul II I combined the features of the Sharpys with the Alpha Spot QWO 800s to make up an effects light package that created interesting looks for the broadcast recording,” explains Pachciarek.
Like the Sharpy, the Alpha Spot QWO 800 is a high output light. It is equipped with optical features that place the luminaire at the very top of its class, including a wide zoom range from 7.6º to 55º, a uniform beam distribution at all zoom angles and a unique Stay-Sharp-Zoom feature that ensures a sharp focus whilst zooming.
“Clay Paky fixtures are really great lights,” concludes Pachciarek. “They are high quality, trouble free and I am always happy to use them.”

MOSCOW — Clay Paky and Doka will celebrate 20 years of partnership in Moscow on June 4, 5 and 6. Italy-based Clay Paky credited Doka for helping its brand become associated with the Bolshoi, Mariinsky, Alexandrinsky, Novosibirsk and many other theatrical venues in Russia.
“It was 1994 and Clay Paky was exhibiting at SIB in Rimini, Italy, at that time one of the most representative fairs for our industry,” said Pasquale Quadri, chairman of Clay Paky. “A young man turned up and suggested the company he worked for, Doka, should become Clay Paky distributor on the Russian market. He was Alexander Fokichev, the current General Manager of Doka.”
Doka was already a well-established company in Russia at that time. Their target was almost exclusively the theatre market. Fokichev was impressed by the quality of our lights and the innovative nature of our products, especially the moving lights, like the Golden Scan. He therefore proposed a partnership to help Clay Paky develop on the Russian market. This allowed the Italian company to establish itself in very little time on the stages of major Russian theatres – famous throughout the world – such as the Bolshoi, Mariinsky, Alexandrinsky, Novosibirsk and many others. The lights were also quickly successful in the TV, corporate and live sectors in Russia.
The partnership between the two companies is still very firm and lively, and is reinforced by the strong friendship which ties its participants.
Alexander Fokichev, Doka’s General Manager, said: “For my part, Clay Paky is above all a fantastic group of people, besides being the leader in professional lighting from time immemorial. LONDON — LD Richard Rhys Thomas of the Royal Albert Hall (RAH) used Clay Paky fixtures for the Mountbatten Military Festival of Music March 13-15. He used 36 Alpha Wash Halo 1200s, 16 Stage Line fixtures and a half-dozen Alpha Wash 1200, Alpha Wash 575, Alpha Spot HPE 575 and Stage Scan fixtures, all supplied by the RAH.

Her Majesty’s Royal Marines performed traditional marching songs alongside bespoke compositions and a soaring rendition of Swedish pop-group Abba’s top hits. Thomas’s lighting design wrapped the orchestra in swathes of color, working in flawless harmony with the score.
“The brief was to create lighting that would seamlessly complement the music,” explains Thomas. “The music ranged from film to classical, big band to traditional marches and the spectacular corps of drum displays. The standard of music was remarkable and so it didn’t take much to create a spectacular show.”
“The rich feature set of the Clay Paky fixtures makes them a great workhorse for the Royal Albert Hall venue,” continues Thomas. “They cope well with the day to day usage and the variety of shows. Some of the notable features are the consistent brightness and color temperature of the fixtures. The color mixing is really impressive, allowing the creation of a broad range of colors, especially in the magenta and deep blue range. The optics of the spot fixtures are also impressive and razor sharp.”
One of the biggest challenges for Thomas this year was to balance a ‘traditional’ look with a slightly updated twist. “Trying to think of new ideas in a venue with an extensive rig when the layout and format of the concert does not change dramatically year on year is always going to be a challenge. The answer to this has been to introduce Clay Paky fixtures into the design, which helped to change the overall look and feel of the show as well as providing greater saturated color.”
Clay Paky has always featured in the Royal Albert Hall’s rig due to their versatility and reliability, “Over the years the rig has been built upon to cater for the wide variety of shows and productions that we host at the hall. Clay Paky fixtures have always been a large part of it,” explains Thomas. “The Clay Paky Alpha Wash Halo 1200s were selected because of the need to light classical concerts and orchestras, as well as the fact they’re great for TV and can also be used for other genres such as rock ‘n’ roll.”
The Royal Albert Hall is one of the world’s most historical performance venues and hosted 391 productions in 2013. This includes the Mountbatten Festival of Music, which pays tribute to her Majesty’s armed forces.

BLACKBURN, U.K. — HSL, based here, provided 30 Clay Paky Sharpys and 30 Jarag lighting fixtures to LD Tom Kinane for the new BBC quiz show series, The Link. The first 25 episodes were recorded in Studio A at BBC Scotland in Glasgow and produced by STV Productions. Presented by Mark Williams (of Harry Potter fame) and directed by Julian Smith, it will air on BBC1 during a primetime 5-6 p.m. slot.

The show format sees three teams race against time to find ‘The Link’ between questions, in the process their daring, strategy and teamwork is rewarded.
HSL’s Project Manager Sean McGlone comments, “We have worked with Tom on many projects and it’s always a pleasure. His lighting brings a freshness and a new visual dimension to any environment in addition to all the standard requirements, so there is always something different to look out for.”
Kinane has lit a diversity of quiz shows in his career, and for this one, his creative starting point was Chris Webster’s set design which had a heavy LED presence.
This partly influenced his choice of lighting fixtures and the Jarags in particular were picked to provide a super-bright tungsten source that would contrast with the LEDs.
These and the Sharpys provided essential eye candy.
“I wanted to introduce a touch of quirkiness and an off-beat feel with the lighting and I was pleased with what we achieved,” comments Kinane adding, “As always, it was great working with HSL – the kit and the service were up to all the standards one expects”.
The Jarags were rigged in the studio roof and on the floor around the circular set and provided excellent back-filler for camera shots.
The Sharpys were used for providing those fabulous sumptuous ceiling focuses that they do so well, and with the addition of gobos and prisms, Kinane could vary the Sharpy looks and develop specific lighting scenes for certain parts of the show.
Around 80 x LED Ribbon 1s, ensconced in the set and supplied by Adam Howard and Jez Smith were also under Kinane’s control.
The Link’s commissioning editor Jo Street, who together with Gary Chippingham and Paul Johnson was one of the Executive Producers, was extremely pleased with the aesthetic results.
Kinane’s team included Moving Light Operator Max Conwell, who programmed on his own ChamSys console, and Richard Jarvis Lighting provided the lighting technicians including Chief Tech, Daniel Kinane.
The Crew Chief was John Adamson, and the generic and white lights were operated by Richard Jarrett, both from BBC Scotland’s in-house lighting crew.
