The design team for Microsoft’s Xbox visuals, which used video gear from Chaos Visual Productions, also relied upon a Chaos-supplied d3 setup for visual management. Along with five d3 4U v2.5 units (1 master, 2 slaves, 2 understudies), Chaos provided nine 30K Christie projector (6 active) and three 9mm Winvision LED walls for the event. The design team credited the d3 setup for helping the elaborate visual elements come together within a five-day time frame.

With all eyes in the video gaming industry on the live-streamed press conferences, all E3 exhibitors pulled out the stops to show what’s in store for the upcoming year. As in previous years, Microsoft’s Xbox console presented its games previews with help of Zed Ink, an experiential marketing agency specializing in emotive & immersive events.

Erin Hearne was appointed as the project’s Creative Director and Drew Findley as screens producer. Content creation company Toy Robot was brought on board as well, and all worked together on creating an impressive show. The project’s lighting designer, Manny Treeson from NYX Design, doubled in role as hardware system designer. Not only did he look after the best LED / media server set-up, but also after the structure for the workflow.

Ensuring efficient delivery of video content from the different game development companies, who were all included in the press preview, was one of the key challenges of the project. With a large amount of content layers and the set-up time for the show being only five days, the Xbox event at E3 could be seen as a good example of a high-pressure environment, where there is little time or space for corrections or alterations.

d3 Solution

That’s where d3 came into play: with it’s powerful simulation features, content workflow and simultaneous editing tools, it allows everyone involved to see what a show will look in advance of starting the build up, streamline communication and management, and save time on site . With the Xbox stage featuring three 9mm LED screens with a resolution of 3840×1080 overall, supplied by Chaos Visual Productions, as well as three double stacked 30K Christie projectors (provided by Creative Technologies North America), Manny opted for a very solid server infrastructure: with five d3 4U v2.5s in total, three active d3 4U v2.5’s were used in a single master, dual slave and dual understudy network.

Manny explains: “We started working with d3 very early in the process. As we, the creative team, began the overall show design, Erin wanted to explore how the video content would pay across the physical design as the dynamic cameras (jibs, steadicams, tower cams) moved throughout the arena. d3 was wonderful during the design phase.”

Stephan Hambsch from Chaos Visual Productions, supplying the d3 systems next to the LED walls, adds: “We had been in discussions about this event for a few months, as the show’s success hinged on the fact that the infrastructure was able to handle the designers needs – preparation played a key role.”

With a short set-up time available, both Stephan and Manny mention d3’s MultiEdit feature as a valuable time-saver. “MultiEdit was priceless for this show”, says Stephan. “It allowed Jackson Gallagher and Nils Porrmann, who were onsite for programming and operation, to work simultaneously. So while Jackson was pre-programming one track with newly delivered content, Nils was sequencing the final edit. This is usually a very time-consuming process, so MultiEdit helped to reduce time drastically. With these types of shows, everyone usually expects a headache, but it went extremely smoothly.”

Nils adds: “We were certainly able to make the content team’s job more fluid. Programming content changes normally takes a larger part of the day, but now we could work through alterations faster than the team could render the amends.”

Chaos Visual Productions started working on the full pre-visualisations two weeks in advance of the show, staying in close contact with Manny and Drew, building the show in 3D right up until the set-up. After the event, Manny expressed his sentiments for the team, and the show: “I’m really proud of the entire team, it truly was a fantastic show. I’d also like to take a minute to say thank you to the d3 team, as we’ve felt supported throughout the entire show process.”

Ohio’s Hollywood Casino Uses RCF, dB Technologies Gear for Outdoor Concert Series

The setup returns to the Hollywood Casino in Toledo, OH this summer.TOLEDO, OH — For the second annual Spotlight Summer Nights concert series at the open-air amphitheater at the Hollywood Casino here, Great Lakes Sound, Inc. provided RCF line arrays with dB Technologies subwoofers and monitors. The venue, in close proximity to both the Ohio River and an interstate highway, is supporting shows featuring Smokey Robinson, .38 Special, Night Ranger, Travis Tritt, Wilson Phillips, George Thorogood, Pat Benatar, Everclear, Soul Asylum, Chevelle and Robby Krieger’s Jam Kitchen.

Chevelle will also return as one of this summer's featured acts. This photo, from last summer's concert, is provided courtesy of Hollywood Casino.Their choice for sound reinforcement – RCF line arrays with dB Technologies subwoofers and monitors. This is a joint venture between the casino and Toledo-based Great Lakes Sound, Inc. The system is comprised of 8 RCF TTL33-A active three-way cabinets flown per side along with 8 dB Technologies DVA-S30N dual 18” subwoofers. For sidefills, Parks added one RCF 4PRO 6001 three-way cabinet coupled with one dB Technologies DVA-S20DP subwoofer per side. dB Technologies DVX DM15 active monitors cover the stage.

Great Lakes Sound owner Bill Robison notes, “on delivery day the system was rigged and immediately put to the test,” and quickly realized, “what this PA was capable of. The dB Technologies DVA-S30S subwoofers do a great job and are a perfect compliment to the system as well.

“The system is quick and easy to install. Also, because all of the boxes in the system are powered, our normal footprint is greatly reduced. This is nice because it’s a pretty cozy venue in terms of backstage and wing space.”

Regarding comments from the performers, Robison says, “So far, all of the travelling engineers who have mixed on the system have had pleasant things to say about the RCF and dB Technologies package.”

The system will once again provide reinforcement for a wide variety of rock, R&B, and country acts this year.

As the system is flown on a temporary basis for the shows, the fact it features RDNet is a critical component as they system literally gets set up the day of the show using a StageLine trailer for the summer events. RDNet is RCF’s RS-485 proprietary protocol allowing for monitoring of all system components and control of system parameters. As the rig is flown for the show, all components including on-board amplifiers and each individual transducer can be tested to be in proper working order. And, with RDNet control, Parks is able to meet with the performer’s front-of-house engineer during rehearsal walk-through and apply any necessary changes needed in the system quickly to meet the artist’s sound requirements.

Masque Sound Supports Spoleto Festival USA

Photo by Julia LynnCHARLESTON, SC — For the 38th annual Spoleto Festival USA, which kicked off here May 23, sound supervisor Lew Mead turned to Masque Sound for an audio package to support the multi-venue celebration, which spans more than two weeks in length. Festival engineer Kate Foretek also spent close to two weeks in the Masque Sound shop, piecing together the various custom equipment packages.

For 17 days and nights each spring, Spoleto Festival USA fills Charleston, South Carolina’s historic theaters, churches and outdoor spaces with performances by renowned and emerging artists and performers in opera, theater and dance, as well as chamber, symphonic, choral and jazz music.

Photo by Julia LynnAs sound supervisor, Mead is given the incredibly challenging task of piecing together all of the different equipment and staffing needs of the various companies at each venue, to not only provide them all with exactly what they need for their shows but also to allow them the flexibility to coordinate with multiple performers in one space. In order to pull this off, Mead begins his pre-planning as early as November of the previous year and works with an audio staff of 10 engineers during the festival.

“Months before the festival, we compile all of the drawings and requirements for each artist and performer,” says Mead. “I then work with the venues directly to discuss which equipment we can place in each location. Lighting Supervisor Andy Cissna, Special Projects/Carpentry Coordinator Paul Hunter, Director of Production at Spoleto Festival Rhys Williams and I are in constant communication to try to blend all of the different requirements for each venue together so that it works for all parties involved.”

The 2014 festival finale. Photo bhy Julia Lynn courtesy Masque Sound.In addition, Festival Engineer Kate Foretek spent two weeks in the Masque Sound shop, piecing together the various custom equipment packages that the festival events required before shipping the packages to Charleston.

“The crew at Masque Sound has been fantastic to work with and incredibly helpful in terms of assisting our team through the engineering and extensive planning that goes into all of the different events,” adds Mead. “Everyone at Masque Sound is very forward-thinking, and they were all quick to anticipate and address our needs. Additionally, the depth of their inventory is great. They are always able to provide us with the exact equipment we are looking for.”

One particular instance in which Masque Sound was able to provide Mead with specific equipment to accommodate a performer’s request occurred during preparations for acclaimed recording artist Lucinda Williams’ performance. “Lucinda Williams requested two DiGiCo SD10 Live Digital consoles for her performance at the TD Arena,” says Mead. “We haven’t used the SD10s in the past, because they’ve been quite a rare commodity in the industry, but Masque Sound stocks them in its inventory and ensured that the consoles would be made available to my team. We were thrilled to be able to supply Ms. Williams with these fantastic consoles, as the sound quality was impeccable.”

Mead also credits Masque Sound’s customer service and hands-on approach as a big part of the festival’s success. “When I’m looking at these venues, I try to do it with an open mind, envisioning the different equipment that Masque Sound can offer me and seeing if I can make it work. Scott Kalata, from Masque Sound, came down to Charleston and toured all of the venues with me and came up with some suggestions, which was very helpful. The fact that I can call anyone on the team—whether that person is Scott, Gary Stocker or Dennis Short—and quickly be offered equipment advice is a huge benefit. It is really great to be able to rely on them as a resource, and it is very reassuring to know that with their extensive inventory, they can accommodate my needs for an event of this size and scope.”

In total, the festival utilized more than 200 microphones, 100 speakers and 5 digital consoles from some of the audio industry’s top manufacturers, including DiGiCo, Sennheiser, JBL and Meyer, all adding up to an incredibly successful premier performing arts festival.

The Big Winner at the Tony Awards? Broadway!

With 16 musicals and 23 plays opening on Broadway in the 2013-2014 season, the 68th Annual Tony Awards was one of the most prosperous and reassuring in recent theater history. Not to mention, as Tony presenter Judith Light announced, “We’ve just seen the highest-grossing, best-attended Memorial Day week” ever. It’s a good time to be in the business.
“A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder” proved this year’s dark horse. A show 11 years in the making, the musical comedy was a bit slow out of the gate this past fall but ultimately galloped off with four Tony wins, including best costume design of a musical to Linda Cho, best book of a musical to Robert L. Freedman, best director of a musical to Darko Tresnjak, and the most coveted prize of the night: best musical.
“Hedwig and the Angry Inch,” the rock ‘n’ roll revival that’s blowing the roof off the Belasco Theatre eight shows a week, also took home four statues. Predicted frontrunner Neil Patrick Harris indeed won the prize for best leading actor in a musical for his fierce performance, and the show also earned awards for best lighting design to Kevin Adams, best revival of a musical, and best

South African Premier Business Awards Show Rig Includes Clay Paky B-EYE FixturesJOHANNESBURG — For the second annual South African Premier Business Awards, attended by South Africa’s president Jacob Zuma, Outlaw Events brought in production director/LD Chris Bolton of Keystone Productions. Bolton used a dozen of Clay Paky A.leda B-EYE K20 fixtures in a crest configuration above the stage, which featured performers Lloyd Cele (winner of Idols South Africa TV talent competition) and The Soweto Gospel choir. The spectacular Clay Paky A.leda B-EYE K20 proved yet again why it holds a triple-award winning status as it performed fantastic light effects at the 2nd Annual South African Premier Business Awards in Johannesburg.

Attended by none other than the country’s president Jacob Zuma, the awards, organized by Outlaw Events, is a lively celebration of outstanding achievement in the world of South African business and enterprise. Production director Chris Bolton of Johannesburg-based production specialists Keystone Productions designed and directed the project’s impressive set, AV and lighting elements.

“I knew straight away that I wanted to make the B-EYE the crowning jewel of my design,” says Bolton. “I saw the fixtures in Italy last year and instantly wanted them. All I can say for these awards is – wow they did not let me down, what an event!”

Bolton rigged 12 x Clay Paky A.leda B-EYE K20s provided by Keystone’s long-term preferred technical suppliers MGG in a large crest above the center of the stage where entertainment was provided by Lloyd Cele (Idols Winner) and The Soweto Gospel choir.

“I used 3 layers of truss arrayed and rigged the fixtures centre off point from one another allowing for some awesome position combinations. The B Eye’s unbelievable ability to act as a wash light, serious beam light and never before seen FX Light earned it the key lighting position in the rig.”

Bolton found he could flood the stage with colour using B-EYE’s powerful wash mode, which currently stands 20% brighter than any LED wash with the same rated power (15W). He also made good use of the fixtures 60º maximum zoom and, to create zingy aerial effects, Bolton employed the fixture’s beam mode, which operates in a minimum zoom of 4º, to create spears of light.

Finally the fixture’s renowned ‘graphics’ mode captivated the awards audience as they witnessed kaleidoscopic chases of colour and vortex lighting effects, attainable only through the B-EYE’s innovative rotating front lens.

Duncan Riley, managing director of DWR, Clay Paky distributor for South Africa adds: “We are delighted to see the B-EYE get such a good workout with Chris and his team. Since their launch last year at PLASA 2013 the B-EYE fixtures have proved to be hugely popular with our market. Users get so many lighting effects and styles rolled into one. This is particularly good for touring shows and events where less fixtures offering more effects make it more economical both in number of fixtures required and in the power consumed.”

The 2nd South African Premier business awards took place on the 19th of March at the ‘The Pavilion’ room in Johannesburg’s Sandton Convention Centre. President Zuma commented, “These awards recognise and honor South African enterprises and entrepreneurs who promote the spirit of success, innovation and good business ethics in our economy. Today, we can confidently say, we have not only a good, but a great story to tell.”

“The brief for the show was to create a visually stunning environment for the performance of the 32 songs,” explains Jönsson. “I went for a ‘Metal meets Eurovision’ look with an old-school ‘ACL-look’ lighting rig but with ultramodern technology. My first inspiration for the look of the rig was actually an old Def Leppard logo since the first drafts of the stage and set reminded me of the angular writing style.

Melodifestivalen Tour Rig Includes 150+ Clay Paky Fixtures“The real challenge was to create a 360 degree environment with sufficient key and backlight for the cameras as well as big lighting effects that were different for all the 32 entries, six openings and eight intermission acts,” explains Jönsson. “The Sharpys for the touring kit were all rigged in ‘ACL-groups’ of four units scattered over and around the stage to form the backbone of the effects we needed. They are a great fixture to work alongside video and for the show they cut through our custom made LED screens without a problem. The Sharpy Washes were rigged in a similar matter, but further apart to provide sufficient wash-light and blinder effects.”

It has an output that is mind-blowing and produces wonderful colors. I also like the look of it when you see it in the rig due to its Fresnel lens – it is physically a really nice piece of equipment.”

Melodifestivalen Tour Rig Includes 150+ Clay Paky FixturesThe Sharpy Wash 330 gets its name from its 330W output and, like its brother the Sharpy, is lightweight (18.5kg) with a startlingly low power draw. The Sharpy Wash has an adjustable beam angle from 6.5º to 48º with a CMY colour system and rotating beam shaper making it a perfect effects wash light.

The Melodifestivalen tour has recently come to an end with Swedish singer Sanna Nielsen winning the much-coveted position to represent Sweden in Eurovision 2014 with her song ‘Undo’.

LD Mike Marcario’s design included Martin MAC 2000 Washes, Martin MAC Auras, GRN Batten 3-36 units, 8-lite moles and PAR 64s, controlled via a grandMA 2 console.

The event featured performances by Chris Young, Kacey Musgraves and Martina McBride. Two-time Grammy award winner Jim Lauderdale hosted while cast members of ABC’s Nashville mingled with the crowd and even performed on stage.

Lighting designer Mike Marcario utilized Martin MAC 2000 Washes for the downstage front wash, along with Martin MAC Auras and GRN Batten 3-36’s for the mid and upstage bars.  He also included 8-lite moles and par 64’s downstage for audience light and key light, respectively and operated a grandMA 2 console.

One challenge Marcario prepared for was the weight factor. Due to the mobile stage and the fact that the long summer days meant most of the set times would take place before the sun set, the chosen fixtures needed to both be weight-friendly and still pop in the daylight.

“The Mac 2000 Wash has always been a preferred wash fixture for me because they are quite versatile, feature heavy, and have great color temperature correction,” explained Marcario. “Bandit’s GRNlite line is always an obvious choice for this event because they are extremely bright, and light on power consumption. I had never used the battens in the air before, and can say I was not disappointed – they have a very even wash, which worked well to cover the stage.  The Mac Aura is a wonderful fixture for many of the same reasons – very bright, low power consumption, feature heavy, and it possesses that great ‘aura’ eye candy effect we’ve all come to love.”

While some events may have specific requirements for each headlining artist, Marcario was given free reign.

“(Production manager) Chris Lisle has been the production manager on this event for many years, and he always does a fantastic job making sure each artist is well taken care of,” Marcario explained. “It was a fantastic lineup of talent and musical ability, but also a fantastic group of people to work alongside.”

“Bandit Lites is always a preferred vendor of mine,” added Marcario. “Gear can come from anywhere, but Bandit is unparalleled in its people – on the shop floor and in the business office.  In this whole process, I was never told “no”, whether it was a fixture substitution or needing a few extra clamps day of show. Brent Barrett is my client rep, and he has been encouraging and working with me since I started in this business. Matt King was the project manager for this event, and I always enjoy being on a gig with him in that role because I know I don’t have to worry about if the prep is done correctly – it always is. Adam McIntosh was my tech, and his knowledge, confidence, and personality helped the event go as smoothly as was possible.”

Between the incredible performances, good food and socializing, the 16th annual Grammy Block Party concluded as a complete success, one Bandit is proud to be a part of.

Thunder Audio Deploys L-Acoustics For Moogfest 2014

Moogfest, the annual electronic technology, art, science and music festival, expanded its downtown Asheville, North Carolina event to five days. The festival, which takes place in late April, encompassed more than 10 venues.

For audio reinforcement at the main stage located at US Cellular Center’s 2,431-seat Thomas Wolfe Auditorium, Detroit-based Thunder Audio specified the use of its new L-Acoustics K2 loudspeaker system.

The loudspeaker complement for Moogfest 2014’s main stage included left and right arrays of nine K2, plus eight SB28 subs and three ARCS II out-fills per side.

Two additional K2 and two K1-SB subs per side were utilized as side fills, while six KARA enclosures were spread out across the stage lip for front-fill.

Ten LA-RAK touring racks, each loaded with three LA8 amplified controllers, delivered the power and processing.

According to Sam Fotias, director of operations at Detroit’s Paxahau, which curated the artist roster for Moogfest this year, the new rig was a very welcome addition.

“We have been working closely with Thunder Audio for over ten years, so we were extremely excited when they told us they had invested in L-Acoustics’ new K2 system and that we could deploy it at Moogfest this year,” he says.

“Over five days of programming, we had Pet Shop Boys, Kraftwerk, M.I.A. and CHIC with Nile Rogers all play through that system, so quite a broad spectrum of genres and playing styles,” Fotias continues. “Each show sounded great and all of the artists were extremely satisfied, not only with the brand new PA, but with Thunder’s impeccable crew and engineers as well.

“We’re already looking forward to putting K2 through some more paces in the near future.”

This year’s Moogfest marked the ninth annual festival and the fourth to be held in Asheville, the city where Bob Moog spent the last 30 years of his life

The Mother’s Day Music Fest is always the biggest holiday event at the newly renovated, historic Boardwalk Hall, drawing sell-out crowds.

ACIR provided two Yamaha PM5Ds digital audio consoles, one at front of house and one at monitors. The main PA consisted of 16 d&b J8s, four J12s, 16 B2 subs, and D12 amplifiers. The monitor system included 12 d&B Q1s used for side fills along with Q subs, ACIR 115 wedges, and 12 Yamaha T3N amplifiers.

“The system sounded incredible,” states John Grasso, ACIR Professional co-owner who functioned as front of house engineer. The changeover provided festival-like challenges so we treated it as a festival style in that we had three changeovers with only 10 minutes in between to re-set. This was accomplished by great pre-planning on the part of our crew.” In addition to Grasso, the ACIR crew included Dave Lefko, ME; Bobby Harper, systems engineer; Mike Nugent, systems tech; and Dominick Friia as crew chief. ACIR also provided the entire backline.

Philfest is an annual collaboration between A&O Productions and Students for Ecological and Environmental Development (SEED) at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL. The event features bluegrass and folk music as part of an effort to promote environmental awareness and also raises money for the Rocky Mountain Institute, a non-profit aimed at the sustainable use of resources. The day is held in honor of Phil Semmer, a former SEED member, who passed away while studying abroad.

Held this year in early May at Northwestern on the Norris Center’s East Lawn, Sound Works Productions, Inc. of Frankfort, Ill. was once again tapped to provide audio production.
